My Book Reviews

Bitter Tears:

This novel proved to be an eye-opener to me as far as understanding conditions in Europe after the end of the Second World War. I knew the people there dealt with a lot of destruction and hunger. I knew there were those living in eastern countries taken over by the Russians who were forced out because they were Germans. However, I never realized that the conquered German soldiers, instead of being disarmed and allowed to return home, were actually held in prisoner of war camps for an extended time. If captured by the Russians, it probably meant spending the rest of their lives in work camps in Russia. Even if they fled to the American or British sectors where they suspected they would receive better treatment, they knew they were dealing with those nations being bound by treaty to turn those coming from the east over to the Russians.

I thought the author painted a vivid picture of conditions in Germany and Eastern Europe after the war. Her characters effectively portrayed the dilemma of those who would not have chosen to fight in the war, but now the war was over, only wished to be reunited with family and resume their lives. This book was written well. I would recommend it.

Secrets Revealed:

I read about the main character in this book in an earlier book in the series. Before, she was put in a concentration camp for “re-education” because of her activities at the start of the Nazi rise to power. She was rescued, her death faked, and she became an agent for the British while filling a women’s auxiliary job as a Blitzmädel in Norway. However, once the war ended, there was an urgency to get the women attached to the German military out of Norway and back to Germany. The effort did not go smoothly.

I enjoyed how the author dealt with the dilemma Lotte, known by a pseudonym, faced regarding whether it was safe or not to reveal the espionage she had been performing. Would the British who captured her be willing to check out the truth of her story, or treat her like a liar, or perhaps an enemy spy? Would the Germans, once they found out, understand her motives, or regard her as a traitor? The characters in this story were well-developed. Conditions of the day do not appear to have been sugar-coated by the author. The suspense throughout the story kept me engaged to the end. I definitely can recommend this story.

I’m waiting for the next story in this series.
